The MP2x8i NMEA Buffer isolates and buffers NMEA 0183 data or other RS422 signals. It is able to distribute the NMEA signal from two Talkers up to eight Listeners. As the (power) input and output ports are isolated the device ensures the protection of the Talkers and Listeners.
The MP2x8i features two operating modes; auto-switching mode and dual mode. In auto-switching mode you are able to connect two independent Talkers and distribute the signal to eight Listeners.
In dual mode the buffer can be used as two independent buffers with one input and four outputs.
What are the MP2x8i mounting options?
The standard mounting option is bulkhead mounting, through the screw-holes on the bottom plate of the NMEA Buffer. These are easily accessible and screws can be placed without any modification of the product. Also to further easy your installation, kindly note the terminal blocks can be detached without using tools.
Alternatively, if you prefer DIN-rail mounting, there is an accessory available which can be attached to the MP2x8i. Please contact us for more information about the price and availability.
In independent mode, can the MP2x8i transfer different baud rates (bps) perindependent working side? For 1-in & 4-out example for AIS signal and 1-in & 4-out for GPS signal?
Yes, the MP2x8i can process the two different signals and two different baud rates in independent mode. Input signal #1 will be transferred to output 1-4 and input signal #2 will be transferred to output 5-8.
What is the maximum wire thickness which can be fitted inside the terminal block?
A cable diameter up to 1,5 mm² can be fitted. Additionally, a cable diameter up to 2,5 mm² can be fitted if the ferrule is removed.
Does the MP2x8i need an external power source?
Yes, the buffer needs an external power source between 9-36 VDC input range. If the input is 24 VDC the buffer will consume typical 0,6W.
Can I use both 12 VDC and 24 VDC as power source for the MP2x8i?
Yes, you can use 12 VDC or 24 VDC as the MP2x8i will work from 9-36 VDC, so any voltage from this range is accepted.
Can I use the MP2x8i with other data as NMEA0183?
Yes, you can transmit any data which is transmitted over RS-422 (for example Raytheon Anschutz Coutse Bus data).
How many NMEA listener signals can be sit in parallel per each NMEA output?
The NMEA output drivers meet the requirements of TIA/EIA-422-Band ITU Recommendation V.11, which means that up to 10 devices can be connected to one output.
However, the idea of the NMEA Buffer is to have only one device connected per output – because the buffer is used as separator between devices, what makes the network safe in comparison to parallel connections.
Can the MP2x8i accept both RS-422 and RS-232 NMEA input signals?
Yes, the buffer can accept both RS-422 and RS-232 input signals. The input is opto-isolated, so for the MP2x8i it makes no difference which signal is on the input.
Does the MP2x8i also have a RS-232 output (single-ended)?
No, the MP2x8i has only RS-422 output (differential).
In NMEA Standard V2.0 published in January 1992, NMEA0183 has migrated from RS-232 to RS422. RS-422 is more resistant for disturbances and can be transmitted over much longer distances than RS-232. This is why the buffer is designed with only RS-422 outputs.
